The role of government should not be to interfere and meddle in our lives but to:
· Ensure that we have a reliable, sustainable infrastructure (transport, energy, health) and an educated and/or skilled workforce so people can prosper in work and at home;
· Ensure that we live in a country with a safe and sustainable future, protected from the impact of climate change and demographic shifts, with our borders and our freedoms properly defended; and
· Ensure that the most disadvantaged in society are provided with sufficient opportunity to live and advance within it.
In return individuals and businesses have a duty to behave responsibly and respect each other, the community and our environment.
Our system of government is an antiquated one and is too bureaucratic, too expensive and too short sighted to achieve most or all of these goals. Government (both from Westminster and Brussels) should be radically reduced and where possible decisions devolved to local councils and communities. Central government should stop legislating in every aspect of our lives and focus on the long term priorities to guarantee a successful, sustainable future. I hope that the changes implemented by the Cameron administration will address some of these issues and help the UK survive and compete in a very competitive world.
